DATA transfer in NBIOT & What is CIoT EPS Optimisations?
Home LTE NB-IoT 5G(NR-NSA)
Hi
Guys today we are learning about Types of DATA transfer in NB-IoT and
CIoT EPS optimization in detail for NB-IoT, For more update Please visit
our NB-IoT
page.
What is attach with PDN for NB-IoT?
As
part of the attach procedure, the device is required to establish the PDN
connection. This is the case with all 3GPP EPS (Evolved Packet System) releases
up to Rel-13.
What is attach without PDN for NB-IoT?
Consider
a scenario where a huge numbers of devices keep a connection inactive for very
long period of time and seldom transmit data over it. Keeping this scenario in
mind, a new capability had been introduced in 3gpp Rel-13 which allows UEs
supporting CIoT optimizations to remain attached without PDN connection.
A
UE attached without PDN connection only has SMS service available for any data
transmissions. All
of its applications are within the constraints of this capability. A
PDN connection establishment can also be triggered by SMS.
Types of DATA transfer in NBIOT
Data over NAS :
Through this mechanism, small amounts of data can be transferred efficiently in
3GPP systems by using signaling plane. Both IP and non-IP data can be
transferred over NAS. Non-IP Data delivery (NIDD) further optimizes transfer of
small data.
UL data is first transferred from the eNodeB to MME. From there it
can be transferred via the S-GW/P-GW (SGi) or the SCEF. DL data is also
transmitted over the same paths in the reverse direction.
IP and non-IP Data Delivery over SGi:
Small data can be delivered via
SGi for both IP and non-IP PDN. UL data is transferred from the eNodeB to MME
and from there to S-GW and P-GW. DL data is also transmitted over the same
paths in the reverse direction.
Non-IP Data Delivery over SCEF:
A new node called SCEF has been added for
machine type data communication and it supports delivery of non-IP data over
Control Plane. For Non-IP small data transfer over SCEF an interface called T6a
is added between MME and SCEF in the existing EPC architecture.
CIoT EPS Optimisations
Cellular
IoT EPS optimization is a method of improving the support of small data
transfers.
The IoT
devices most commonly use Machine-Type-Communication (MTC), and have a wide
spectrum of capabilities with varied devices. The number of MTC devices is
increasing rapidly and using the existing LTE technology for transmitting data
of these IoT devices would lead to a network overload. Though the user data
transmitted is small, amount of signaling remains the same.
Two
optimizations for the cellular internet of things (CIoT) in the evolved packet
system (EPS) were defined in order to send data to an application:
